1. Anaemia

What is Anaemia?

Anaemia is a condition that develops when your blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells or protein known as haemoglobin. Other symptoms of anaemia include feeling short of breath and heart palpitations. The oxygen that your body needs is not being transported through your bloodstream which can leave you feeling drained and tired.

What can I do?

There are many types of anaemia so one overall treatment won’t suit everybody. If you feel that you may be suffering with anaemia, you should visit your GP. Treatments include adjusting your diet, taking vitamin supplements, injections or a blood transfusion.

2. Under-active Thyroid Gland

What is an Under-active Thyroid Gland?

Your thyroid is a gland located in the neck just in front of the windpipe and its main function is to produce hormones which regulate the metabolism. If your thyroid is under-active, it means it simply doesn’t produce enough hormones. Other symptoms include weight gain, dry skin and hair, depression and muscle aches.

What can I do?

There is currently no cure for the under-active thyroid but it can be treated, usual treatments will include taking supplement hormone tablets which will restore your hormone balance. Under-active thyroids are most common among women with 15 in every 1,000 in the UK affected and around 1 in 1,000 men affected. If you feel that this may be something you are affected by then don’t hesitate to visit your GP where you will undergo a blood test to analyse your hormone level.

3. Depression

What is Depression?

Depression is a mental illness and in today’s society some still don’t take it seriously because it cannot be seen. Depression can be a debilitating condition and make people feel very unwell, because you have no energy and feel drained, you’re sleeping habits suffer as a result.

What can I do?

If you feel depressed or are having worrying thoughts about your own personal safety then you should seriously consider talking to somebody whether it is a medical professional or just a friend or family. There are loads of treatments which can ease and often treat depression such as medication or talking therapies. Other forms of treatment include making lifestyle changes such as exercising, eating healthy and cutting down on alcohol.

4. Anxiety

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is something which everyone will come across and some point in their lives whether it is briefly feeling anxious about an upcoming exam or on a more permanent basis. People who suffer from anxiety often feel stressed and unable to relax, this feeling of tension and worry can result in sleepless nights leading to tiredness and sleep deprivation.

What can I do?

If you struggle with daily tasks such as going to the shops and often feel worried, then don’t hesitate to visit the GP. Treatments for anxiety include cognitive behavioural therapy and medication. Similarly with depression, there are also so lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your anxiety and make you feel and sleep a lot better such as exercising, going to a self-help course or stopping smoking and reducing your alcohol intake.

5. Lack of Sleep

What is considered as a Lack of Sleep?

Lack of sleep can cause you to feel tired in your day to day life, this isn’t a shocking revelation but the amount of us who try and work off the bare minimum in sleep is something that may keep you awake at night. The average adult should aim to get around 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night but that can change depending on us as individuals, some may need more and some may need less.

What can I do?

Many of us stay up late at night due to technology such as TV and mobile phones, a top tip is to reduce your use of electronics in the evening, this will allow your brain to relax and unwind. Maybe your bed is to blame? We, on average, spend a third of our lives sleeping so if you are not comfortable in your bed then you may be in trouble.
